"The early version of the superdry had an external helium compressor that the head hooked up to. I think this version just uses a stack of TECs, that’s why there is a water connection"

"I am not too familiar with those devices, one potential thing to look for is the sterling cryocoolers have a finite life and slowly loose cooling power over time (and no hobbyist I know of has successfully rebuilt one), so if it is a cryocooler based one that has been left on for 10 years it may be shot. TEC shouldn't have that issue"

Basically looks like this is a stirling cooler that generates the cooling in the unit itself. Otherwise its still a SiLi detector with all of the problems that goes with that (ex: extreme thermal cycling may break it, not ideal to leave at room temp, etc)


I've heard these all went bad (FIXME: add details why)
